Rotating disc pits

The capacity of optical storage discs – CD, DVD or Blu-Ray and HD-DVD – could be increased eightfold with a new trick developed by engineers working for Thomson in Germany. Optical discs are covered with millions of identical microscopic pits, but on the new discs those pits will be differently shaped. The laser beam used to record each pit on the disc surface is split down the middle, with one false

Fire tubes

Fires in tall buildings regularly claim lives because firemen cannot carry trapped people down ladders fast enough. An Israeli inventor, Eliyahu Nir, suggests a simple and sensible solution.
A specialised emergency truck would carry an extendible boom that could be raised to a window in a burning building. Jaws at the top of the boom would then expand to clamp a small platform inside the window frame, while a spiralling tube would be dropped from the frame down to the ground.
Anyone trapped inside the building could then step out of the window, onto the platform and into the mouth of the tube. Before they know it they are spiralling safely down to the ground. Nir claims that friction and the tube’s twisted shape should slow their descent, while a soft mat laid on the street below would break their fall.

Classy Kid, Inc and Restaurant Tables

Classy Kid, Inc has just given us another reason to eat in tonight. According to the company, restaurant tables can have more bacteria than diaper changing tables! But surely that depends on the restaurant.

At any rate, they have come up with an interesting invention to go along with their line of Germ Defense ™ products. Their WrapAround PlaceMat ™ is a patent pending line of defense against the germs that can make you sick.

The Germ Defense ™ line of products actually target children. They have created a number of products geared toward helping parents protect the health of their young children (who’s immune systems are not yet fully developed and are possibly more likely to contract something from a restaurant). You can visit their site at www.Classy-Kid.com.

Record Number of International Patents Filed in 2005

Exactly 134,073 international patent applications were filed in 2005, breaking all previous records. This was a 9% increase from the number filed the previous year.

About one-third of these international patent applications were filed from the U.S. In addition to the high numbers of U.S. filings, South Korea and China also contributed heavily to the number of international patent applications filed last year.

The World Intellectual Property Organization attributes the increase due to the increasing “technological strength of these countries”. On another positive note, patents are increasingly filed more often by developing countries.

Licensing Your Invention

Once you have applied for patent protection, it is time to begin the next hurdle: you need to decide whether you want to find a licensee for your invention or take it on yourself as an entrepreneur.

Many inventors opt for licensing, but it is not always easy to find a . A licensee will absorb all of the risk, so they must see a great deal of potential in your invention before they will consider it a worthwhile venture.

So how you approach a licensee is very important. In fact, you should learn a little about licensing before you even invest any money into your invention.

The best way to gain an education in finding a licensee for your invention is to learn from someone with experience. Harvey Reese is a successful licensing agent, new product developer and consultant. He has written a step-by-step guide for new inventors interested in gaining the upper-hand in the licensing game.
